INTO Response To DE Letter of 18 September re: Assessment
INTO LATEST DIRECTIVE: Members should no longer attend training in respect to Assessment Arrangements.
The INTO rejects the crude attempt by the Department of Education [DE] to subvert the rights of teachers to have professional concerns about proposed assessment arrangements and to take part in legitimate industrial action. The letter concerning the Governors statutory obligations in respect to assessment dated September 18th 2015 is both impositional and confrontational in nature leaving no room for a professional engagement with teachers or schools and ignores the fact that the INTO has been proactive at every stage in its attempt to develop an assessment system that is fit for purpose.
INTO’s position has not changed and considers the content of this letter to be a blatant attempt by DE to generate numbers and statistics for regional, national and transnational surveys. In the view of INTO imposing processes that do not enjoy support from the education community will not improve the educational outcomes of one child by one iota.
From INTOs perspective it is a clumsy attempt to disregard the professional concerns of the membership of the largest teaching Union in Ireland. It further seeks to undermine our rights as a trade union to take industrial action to further these concerns. DE, in seeking to use volunteer school governors as a lever in a trade dispute, demonstrates its contempt for the agreed negotiating machinery and does nothing to hasten a resolution of this long running dispute.
INTO will not be intimidated by such tactics and we will continue to support and represent our members in pursuit of a just and equitable solution to this dispute over assessment arrangements.
