Volunteering with VSO Ireland

Feeling stuck in a rut and looking for an exciting new adventure to revitalise your education career? Volunteering with VSO Ireland could be the answer you’ve been looking for.

VSO Ireland is a development organisation that works through volunteers in 24 countries across Africa, Asia and the Pacific. About a third of Irish VSO volunteers work on education programmes at community, district and national level. They train teachers, support school leaders, develop education services and influence government policies to ensure that improvements continue long after they have returned back home to Ireland. It’s in this way that VSO volunteers create sustainable change and help in the fight against poverty around the globe.

So why should you consider volunteering with VSO? As well as sharing your skills and creating positive impact overseas, you have the opportunity to expand upon your professional experience. Many volunteers have noted the opportunities for progression that are not available at home. For instance, Claire Nic Gabhann from Co. Monaghan commented:

“There are more opportunities here to practice and develop your leadership and management skills. You get to design, implement and facilitate programmes.”

This kind of experience can be invaluable if you have been teaching for a few years but are ready to take your career to the next level. Education management, teacher trainer and Ministry of Education roles are also ideal if you’re a little further on in your career or retired. Volunteering gives you the chance to use your time constructively and help the children and adults who need it most.

VSO Ireland offer comprehensive support to volunteers so you don’t need to worry about having money saved up before you go overseas. All costs, including return flights, accommodation, medical insurance and vaccinations, are covered and an in-country volunteer allowance is also offered. You have in-depth training before departure so you are completely prepared for your placement, as well as a full debrief afterwards. Supporting you each step of the way, the VSO Ireland team are there to ensure you have a life-changing and fulfilling placement.

Last year, VSO volunteers worked with 140 partners to train a total of 78,000 educators and reach 922,000 children and adults. Want to be part of the story and start your own volunteer journey? Visit www.vso.ie or email annette.osullivan@vso.ie to find out more about current vacancies.
