INTO Leadership Bulletin

DE has been working on new assessment arrangements to support the revised curriculum. There has been consultation with teachers’ unions.

General

·        INTO welcomes the emphasis on an integrated model of assessment, which recognises the professionalism of teachers and the place of assessment within the teacher competency framework.

·        Assessment ought to reflect and support the central role of the teacher in the classroom.

·        INTO was given a commitment that assessment would be straightforward and fit for purpose in a way that does not divert time and resources from teaching.

Levels of Progression

·        INTO welcomes the introduction of the Levels of Progression but for them to achieve acceptability they must fit into the Qualifications and Credit Framework.

·        INTO has expressed concern that if the measurement and recording of Levels becomes a high stakes activity their value as a formative and diagnostic tool will be lost.

Training

·        INTO has been given a commitment that training in assessment will be a Department priority and that adequate and proper training for Principals and teachers will be provided by CCEA.

Timetable

·        INTO support the proposal to extend the implementation timetable for a further year. This would allow for two years consultation and training and the implementation for the assessment arrangements in 2012/13.

INCAS

·        INTO has expressed concern about the reporting of INCAS scores.  As a result DE is working on improved options for reporting to parents to be discussed with teachers’ unions and schools.
