INTO Leadership Bulletin
DE has been working on new assessment arrangements to support the revised curriculum. There has been consultation with teachers’ unions.General
· INTO welcomes the emphasis on an integrated model of assessment, which recognises the professionalism of teachers and the place of assessment within the teacher competency framework.
· Assessment ought to reflect and support the central role of the teacher in the classroom.
· INTO was given a commitment that assessment would be straightforward and fit for purpose in a way that does not divert time and resources from teaching.
Levels of Progression
· INTO welcomes the introduction of the Levels of Progression but for them to achieve acceptability they must fit into the Qualifications and Credit Framework.
· INTO has expressed concern that if the measurement and recording of Levels becomes a high stakes activity their value as a formative and diagnostic tool will be lost.
Training· INTO has been given a commitment that training in assessment will be a Department priority and that adequate and proper training for Principals and teachers will be provided by CCEA.
Timetable
· INTO support the proposal to extend the implementation timetable for a further year. This would allow for two years consultation and training and the implementation for the assessment arrangements in 2012/13.
INCAS
· INTO has expressed concern about the reporting of INCAS scores. As a result DE is working on improved options for reporting to parents to be discussed with teachers’ unions and schools.
