Swine Flu Advice
Thursday, 20 August 2009
With the H1N1 (swine flu) virus now established in the community, the Irish National Teachers’ Union (INTO) urged teachers, Principals and Boards of Governors to be vigilant.
Speaking today, Northern Secretary, Frank Bunting said, “At the beginning of a new academic year INTO has noticed an increase in calls from our members about the effects of swine flu and how it will impact on their school. As a result we have urged our frequent hand-washing and disposal of infected tissues. In addition, INTO has issued advice and will update this advice as the term progresses.”
Mr Bunting continued, "INTO also urges our members to follow the DHSSPS guidance and if they think they have swine flu to stay at home, rest, take paracetamol and drink plenty of fluids and not visit their GP practice, pharmacy or A&E in person. If, however, their condition suddenly deteriorates or gets worse after seven days (five for a child) then they should contact their GP or out-of-hours service.” Teachers with underlying health conditions who are at higher risk of complications or who are pregnant should call their GP for advice and assessment for antiviral if they develop influenza. Mr Bunting also urged parents of children who become ill with the virus to, "remain at home and seek appropriate medical advice to prevent the spread of the disease within the greater school community.”
Mr Bunting concluded, “INTO will continue to monitor the situation in the coming months. We urge schools to be vigilant and to be supportive of teachers and pupils who become ill with the swine flu virus.”
