NITC - Additional Schools Investment
Thursday, 19 January 2012
Tony Carlin, Conditions of Service Spokesperson, for the Northern Ireland Teachers’ Council, welcomed on behalf of the Council, the announcement by the Minster of Education to invest an additional £120 million pounds in schools over the next three years. In addition Mr Carlin indicated that the announcement today of improved severance arrangements for teachers will enable them to leave their chosen profession and would also permit schools to manage their staffing costs more effectively.
The NITC congratulates the Minister for Education on securing the additional monies and giving commitment to manage the staffing reductions through voluntary means where possible and to establish a “clearing house” for teachers who are unemployed at the end of the redundancy process.
Mr Carlin concluded, the monies made available today will be a welcome release valve for some schools this year. However NITC now ask that all stake holders agree to work together to ensure that the school workforce can be effectively managed and planned over the next three to four years and to attempt to secure the necessary resources in further monetary rounds to ensure that this can happen.
