Paternity Leave

Chapter 5 (pdf, 620 kb)

Please note, the circulars referenced in this section have been superseded by Chapter Five of the DES publication Terms and Conditions for Registered Teachers in Recognised Primary and Post Primary schools (Edition 2)

July 2017

With effect from 1st September 2016, teachers are entitled to revised Paternity Leave Entitlements of a period of two consecutive weeks paid leave on the birth/adoption of a child, where the date of birth/date of placement of the child falls on or after 1st September 2016.

The DES is due to issue a Circular in advance of the 2016/2017 school year, outlining how the scheme will work in schools. Further details will be available on this page as soon as possible.

Some teachers (those paying Class A PRSI contributions) may be entitled to claim paternity benefit.

In order to claim this benefit, a teacher must hold a Public Services Card. Almost two million of these cards have been issued. The application process for a Public Services Card involves a face to face interview, by appointment in a local office. Teachers who intend to apply for paternity benefit early in the new school year are advised to apply for a Public Services Card as soon as possible.
