Teachers Taking Up Their First Appointment
Teachers taking up their initial appointment must complete, in conjunction with the principal, a special form – Notification of First Appointment – which must then be forwarded by the principal/chairperson of board of management to the DES.
Some personal information will be required by a school as part of the appointment process. It may be useful to have this information ready to give to the school. A form which can be used for this purpose is available from the bottom of the page.
Once the DES is notified it will then proceed to place you on the appropriate point of the incremental scale. Where the pre-service training period for qualification as a teacher is four years (full-time) or more, the teacher is normally placed on the third point of the incremental scale. Where the pre-service training period for qualification as a teacher is three years (full-time), the teacher is normally placed on the second point of the incremental scale. Details of current salary scales and allowances are available here.
On taking up your first post as either a substitute, temporary or permanent teacher you should complete and return to your local tax office, income tax Form 12A. This will allow a Certificate of Tax Free Allowance to be issued and thereby minimise the time you spend on 'emergency tax'. Details of your local tax office can be found on www.revenue.ie.
Teachers serving as substitutes are eligible for full INTO membership at a reduced rate for the school year. Click here for details of INTO membership. Application forms for substitute membership are available directly from Membership Section, INTO Head Office. Temporary and permanent teachers can now join online. Each school has an elected staff representative who will be happy to answer any queries you have regarding INTO membership.
