Elections for Teaching Council
The term of office of the current Teaching Council expires in March 2012. Accordingly, a new Council must be elected between now and March 2012. There are a total of 37 members on the Teaching Council comprising as follows:
- 11 registered teachers representative of the primary sector of whom 9 are elected and 2 are nominated by the INTO;
- 11 registered teachers representative of the post-primary sector of whom 7 are elected and 4 nominated;
- 2 nominees of the Colleges of Education;
- 2 nominees of the Higher Education Institutes;
- 4 persons nominated by school management authorities;
- 2 persons nominated by representatives of parent associations; and
- 5 persons appointed by the Minister including a nominee each of ICTU and IBEC.
For the purposes of the election of the teacher representatives there are 4 constituencies similar to those operating for European elections, ie Dublin, Leinster, Connaught/Ulster and Munster. At its forthcoming meeting in November the CEC will be deciding on the process of endorsing candidates and further details will be published in InTouch.
In the meantime, we understand that the Council is considering the following timetable for the election/appointment of the new Council:
- End of November, 2011 – publication of the Provisional Electoral Roll (PER) and finalising amendments thereto in December;
- Early January, 2012 – publication of notice of elections and inviting nominations;
- End January – Closing date for receipt of nominations;
- Early February – publish notices re candidates and poll details;
- Mid February, 2012 – issuing of postal ballots;
- Mid March, 2012 – Close of poll and counting of votes.
