Probation and Induction for Newly Qualified Teachers

INTO has today received for consultation proposals for the interim arrangements for probation, pending the transfer of probation to the Teaching Council in 2012.

These proposals were announced today in a speech by the Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan, at the MacGill Summer School. Details of an induction programme to be offered to all newly qualified teachers next year are also set out.

The INTO has issued a statement saying that the induction programme proposed falls far short of the model which was successfully piloted since 2002.

The CEC will consider these matters and will make a response to the Department. The Executive will also consider the implications of the transfer of probation and induction to the Teaching Council at its August meeting.
