Press Notice: National Demonstration Against Education Cuts 3/12/08

A national demonstration against the education cuts outlined in the budget will be held in Dublin on Saturday 6th December 2008. The demonstration is being organised on a co-operative basis by INTO, TUI, ASTI and IFUT with the support of parents and school management authorities.
 
Teachers, parents, principals, members of management boards and members of the general public will attend.
 
Protesters will assemble in Parnell Square from noon on Saturday on the north side (Gallery) of Parnell Square.  The protest will move off to Merrion Square at 1pm for a rally. The route of the march will be Parnell Square East, O’Connell Street, D’Olier Street, Nassau Street, Leinster Street, Clare Street, Merrion Square West finishing in Merrion Square South.
 
Speeches will take place at a rally on the south side of Merrion Square. Speakers will include INTO, ASTI, TUI, IFUT, NPC, Management and ICTU.
 
The protesters will march under a “Schools United” banner.
 
In an effort to minimise disruption to traffic and facilitate the business community marchers have been encouraged to arrive by public transport if possible. The gardai have drawn up a traffic management plan and have also sought the co-operation of the unions in directing some marchers directly to the rally in Merrion Square.
