Government’s Three Day School Closure
Government’s Decision to Close Schools for Three Days
Friday, 8 January 2010
Statement by Sheila Nunan, Incoming General Secretary, INTO, on Government’s decision to close schools for three days.
The INTO has said the decision to close schools next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday is sensible in the current circumstances.
Sheila Nunan, incoming general secretary of the INTO said the decision provides an opportunity to make sure that vital work gets underway to make sure that it is safe for young children to return to school. “This needs to be done before traffic volumes return to term time levels,” she said.
“At the moment there are major doubts over school transport due to untreated roads, particularly in rural areas. “Pavements outside most schools are in a lethal condition,” she said.
She called on local authorities to prioritise school routes from early next week so that schools can reopen safely as soon as possible.
“The announcement will provide certainty for everyone,” she siad. “With forecasts predicting more snow over the weekend, the last thing we needed was to see schools on Sunday afternoon still wondering if it would be safe for children to come back to school.”
