Comments by INTO to Irish Daily Mail on damages claim taken against school

The INTO today welcomed the judge’s comments in relation to school yard mishaps.

The union said, “just because there is an accident in a school playground doesn’t mean it was necessarily someone’s fault”.

Primary schools are very aware of health and safety implications, particularly in school playgrounds.

Schools try to minimise risks at all times.  However, children cannot be wrapped in cotton wool and from time to time accidents will happen.

Children need to be able to play and move about in a school yard.

The first port of call following a school yard accident should not be a Solicitor’s office. ENDS

The pupil had sued the school through her mother on the basis that staff had been negligent in having failed to stop a game of chase, in which the child was engaged during a lunch break in 2010.
