October 2016 – Equality Conference and Féilte
On October 1st, group members Dáithí Ryder and John Thomas Doohan presented an interactive workshop at the INTO Equality Conference celebrating diversity in family backgrounds.
On the same day Ciara Fagan and Cecelia Gavigan provided advice and resources to teachers around combating homophobic and transphobic bullying at the Féilte Teaching and Learning Festival while group Chairperson Díon Ó Caoimh made valuable insights to a panel discussion on diversity in schools.
July 2016 – First Ever Summer Course!
Two members of the group developed and facilitated an INTO backed summer course ‘Inclusive Schools – Combating Homophobic, Transphobic and Cyber Bullying’ in the Teachers’ Club.
The course was a resounding success with guest speakers from BeLonGTo, TENI and LGBTwithkids adding greatly to the richness of the learning for the participants.
Pride March June 2016
INTO President Rosena Jordan and Vice President John Boyle joined members of the INTO LGBT Teachers' Group and INTO Officials at Pride in Dublin on Saturday June 25th.

February 2016 - GALA Award for Sheila Crowley
The wonderful Sheila Crowley, one of our founding members, was awarded ‘Volunteer of the Year’ GALA in the Mansion House for her pioneering work on behalf of LGBT teachers and her work in the group between 2004 and 2010.

October 2015 – Féilte
For the first time the group had a stand at Féilte – the Teaching Council Festival. Ciara, Róisín, Margaret and Cecelia provided advice, support and resources to teachers interested in combating and preventing homophobic and transphobic bullying and improving LGBT inclusion in their schools.
July 2015 – Gender Recognition Bill
The group welcomed the passage of the Gender Recognition Bill and look forward to working with all interested parties to ensure the inclusion of trans identities in our primary schools.
June 2015 – Pride
The group joyfully marched in a wonderful Pride celebrating the Yes vote in the Marriage Equality referendum but took the opportunity to remind the partiers that 37.1 was still an existing and real chill factor for LGBT teachers.
April 2015 – Fringe Event at Congress
Cecelia Gavigan from the group, in partnership with Sandra Irwin Gowran from GLEN presented ‘Teaching Respect: Supporting Teachers to be Inclusive in the Classroom’ in a fringe event at the annual INTO Congress.
February 2015 – Launch of RESPECT
Minister Jan O Sullivan launched the first primary teachers’ resource on explicitly dealing with homophobic and transphobic bullying – ‘RESPECT: Creating a Welcoming and Positive School Climate to Prevent Homophobic and Transphobic Bulling in Primary School’. The resource had been developed in partnership with GLEN, the INTO and INTO LGBT Teachers’ Group.
October 2014 - INTO LGBT Teachers’ Group Meets President Michael D. Higgins
The INTO LGBT Teachers' Group met with President Michael D. Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin. The invitation was issued in recognition of the group's ten year anniversary.
GALA AWARD WIN!
The INTO LGBT Teachers' Group was delighted to win the award for Best Voluntary Organisation at the GALAs (Gay and Lesbian Awards) at the Shelbourne hotel, Dublin on March 1st, 2014. The GALAs were set up by Gay Community News (GCN) and the National Lesbian and Gay Federation (NLGF) to honour lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgendered people and organisations for their contributions to Irish society. The awards also honour politicians, employers and others who are committed to advancing equality and social acceptance for LGBT people in Ireland.
The award is a testament to the courage and determination of all INTO LGBT Teachers' Group members, past and present, who have sought to make Irish schools inclusive places for LGBT teachers, where LGBT teachers can be visible and where diversity is valued.
The award comes at a special milestone for the INTO LGBT Teachers' Group, as it celebrates its 10 year anniversary this year. In her acceptance speech,the group's chairperson, Anne Marie Lillis, acknowledged the challenges that still face LGBT teachers in terms of section 37.1, as well as the important contribution of Sheila Crowley, in promoting visibility for LGBT teachers and coming out publicly.

January 2014 - Celebrating 10 years!
In November 2014 the Group will celebrate its 10th anniversary. The first meeting of the Group was held on November 24th 2004 – it only seems like yesterday! The anniversary will be marked in a few ways during the year culminating with an afternoon Education Conference in Dublin on Saturday November 22nd 2014.
November 2013 – Group Makes Submission On 37.1
The Group’s Submission to the Equality Authority in relation to a proposed amendment to Section 37.1. of the Employment Equality Acts
The Group prepared a detailed submission for the Equality Authority on Section 37.1 of the Employment Equality Act, which outlined the concerns of LGBT teachers, and the challenges they face in the workplace, including the silence and invisibility around their relationships. The Group supports the deletion of Section 37.1. The complete submission can be found here.
