General Job description

A vacancy has arisen for the position of Assistant General Secretary (AGS) in the INTO’s Education, Research and Learning Section due to a forthcoming retirement.

The successful candidate will form part of the INTO senior management team comprising the General Secretary, the Deputy General Secretary and Assistant General Secretaries. The successful candidate will have a high-level strategic role in managing the affairs of the organisation, subject to the directions and overall management of the General Secretary. The successful candidate will be expected to progress INTO policy and objectives on trade union and professional matters. They will be accountable to the General Secretary in accordance with INTO policy and the organisation’s Rules and Constitution.

The post involves a wide range of senior management responsibilities to ensure the successful delivery of INTO policy and objectives at individual, team and organisation level.

The successful candidate will have:
  • A strong academic background and appropriate professional experience at a senior level.
  • An appropriate level of Senior Management experience.
  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of INTO’s role and objectives and the external environment in which the Organisation operates.
  • An in depth understanding and analysis of the education system, including the continuum of teacher education, teaching and learning, curriculum and assessment, special education and social inclusion and continuous professional development.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and collaborative skills and an ability to build and maintain relationships with, and influence a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Proven success in generating education research and policy development.
  • Strong analytical, reporting and project management skills.
  • Demonstrable leadership experience and the ability to manage and develop a team of people to deliver a reliable and quality service for INTO members.
  • A results driven approach with evidence of being innovative, energetic and flexible in advancing strategy.

The successful appointee will enter into a detailed contract of employment with the INTO and the place of work will be INTO Head Office, Parnell Square, Dublin.

A vacancy has arisen in the INTO Northern Office for the position of Official. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a dynamic team delivering on INTO objectives for members. The person appointed will be located in the INTO Northern Office, 23-24, College Gardens, Belfast, BT9 6BS.

General Job Description

The successful applicant will be part of a team in the INTO Northern Office. Flexibility regarding duties to meet the needs of INTO Northern Office is a key requirement, and while working across sections of the office is essential, the appointee will be assigned initial duties covering the following areas:

  • Responding to members’ queries via telephone, email and correspondence
  • Advising members on conditions of employment, trade union and professional matters
  • Representing and liaising on behalf of members with Boards of Governors and Employing Authorities, Department of Education Northern Ireland and other agencies
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of INTO policy and assisting in the development of services to members
  • Undertaking research and preparing documentation
  • Such other reasonable duties as may, from time to time, be allocated by the General Secretary and Northern Secretary
General Terms and Conditions

Reporting relationship:

To the Northern Secretary and Assistant Northern Secretary.

Salary:

The salary scale for this position is a five-point scale which ranges from £38,017 to £41,799 (maximum point), based on the NI civil service DP scale.

Working Hours:

The basic working week shall be 37 hours. The appointment involves working outside normal office hours.

Holidays:

Thirty-one days per year, together with public holidays.

Sick Pay:

The provisions relating to Teachers will apply.

Pension:

The INTO Staff Pension Scheme is a defined benefit scheme with contributions from employee and employer, with full details to be found in the Pension Handbooks on the Staff Intranet. Both contribution and benefits are integrated with the social welfare system.

The successful appointee will enter into a detailed contract of employment with the INTO.

Exciting opportunity to work as an Intern in the Northern Office

The INTO invites applications for the position of paid intern.

This position will be for the school year 2021/22. The person appointed will be located in the INTO Northern Office, 23-24, College Gardens, Belfast, BT9 6BS.

The position will be filled by an INTO member on secondment from their teaching post and subject to the person concerned securing approval as necessary from their board of governors.

The person appointed will be required to work normal office hours, Monday to Friday, for the school year 2021/22. They will be subject to INTO Northern Office conditions and protocols, in terms of hours, holidays, and other relevant staff policies. The appointee will continue to be paid as a teacher with the INTO refunding the employer. The maximum refundable salary will be based on the UPS salary scale (the maximum point of which is £41,049). The appointee will continue to accrue pensionable service as a teacher and will not be a member of the INTO staff pension scheme.

The responsibilities of the internship will include working directly with sections within the INTO as assigned, assisting with members’ queries and cases as assigned, attending meetings and preparing papers as required, researching specific issues, participation in internal meetings, providing administrative support and such other reasonable duties as may be assigned by the Northern Secretary.
