Colleagues, can I again ask you to take a few moments to read the information below and add your name to the petition below if you have not already done so.
Trade Unionists across Europe, Non-Governmental Organisations in most EU states, the Biden administration in the US and now the European Parliament are all calling for a waiver of intellectual property rights over all vaccines, treatments and therapies developed to combat the coronavirus scourge. But the European Commission remains opposed.
As Irish citizens, as EU citizens, we have limited means of influencing the decision-making process. But we can compel the European Commission to give serious consideration to all measures that could possibly help ensure a significant increase in vaccine production across the globe and thereby improve the distribution of vaccines, including to the poorest and least developed regions of our world.
Concerned citizens from a number of member states, including Ireland, sought and secured approval from the European Commission to set in train a European Citizens Initiative (ECI), an official EU mechanism, whereby one million EU citizens can compel the Commission to consider certain actions, up to and including legislation.
