Northern Conference 2016: Press Release - ETI Pay Lip Service to Education Committee Recommendations
Wednesday, 2 March 2016
Nuala O’Donnell, Senior Official, speaking ahead of the annual Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) Northern Conference in Templepatrick this weekend said,
“INTO has major concerns over the lack of engagement by the ETI with the recommendations of the Assembly Education Committee following their inquiry into ETI and school improvement, in particular with regard to changes to the inspection process and the ETI complaints procedure.”
The Education Committee report contained 16 recommendations, 11 of which the ETI were responsible for implementing only two of which have been undertaken by the ETI.
Ms O’Donnell continued,
“The ETI have cherrypicked the recommendations they wish to implement and have ignored the other, more meaningful recommendations for teachers. ETI have even determined to implement one of the recommendations for the DE instead of concentrating on the recommendations for themselves which have the potential to effect real change in schools. ”
Meetings between the NITC and the ETI were halted by the NITC due to a lack of engagement by the ETI in addressing issues of concern. The DE recently intervened and hosted a meeting between the NITC and ETI and it is hoped that through DE facilitation progress can be made on some of the areas of concern.
Ms O’Donnell concluded,
“INTO members will use this Conference to call for an inspection system which is not punitive but is supportive, developmental and takes account of individual school
situations is developed and for ETI to be made genuinely accountable to the schools and the education sector through an open, transparent and fair appeals process.”
