The Joint Committee on Education and Skills launched their ‘Report on Challenges Facing Island Schools’ today. INTO president, John Boyle, addressed the committee at the launch and welcomed most of the report’s recommendations, especially the recommendation that the allowance for teachers in island schools be reinstated.
However, the INTO president expressed his acute disappointment regarding two of the recommendations. He stated that special status ought to be given to all island schools, primary and post-primary, in order to ensure the preservation of our heritage on the islands. He also highlighted that the funding of primary schools, including those on our islands, needed to be increased dramatically.
