Primary teachers reaffirm commitment to pay equality

Teachers’ union demand a clear pathway which will achieve pay equality for all teachers.

At the annual Congress of the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation today in Galway, teachers reiterated their commitment to pay equality. The union recognised the positive work that has been done to advance the issue to date but highlighted outstanding pay issues.

Speaking to the motion, Joe McKeown of the Central Executive Committee said, “The recent commitment to seek a resolution to pay equality is welcome. There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind, however, that as far as we are concerned, the only resolution to pay inequality is the restoration of pay equality for all teachers. That day can’t come soon enough.”

Speakers highlighted the cuts that teachers took as a result of emergency legislation and the fact that teachers have not received a pay increase in 14 years.
