General Job description
A vacancy has arisen for the position of Assistant General Secretary (AGS) in the INTO’s Education, Research and Learning Section due to a forthcoming retirement.
The successful candidate will form part of the INTO senior management team comprising the General Secretary, the Deputy General Secretary and Assistant General Secretaries. The successful candidate will have a high-level strategic role in managing the affairs of the organisation, subject to the directions and overall management of the General Secretary. The successful candidate will be expected to progress INTO policy and objectives on trade union and professional matters. They will be accountable to the General Secretary in accordance with INTO policy and the organisation’s Rules and Constitution.
The post involves a wide range of senior management responsibilities to ensure the successful delivery of INTO policy and objectives at individual, team and organisation level.
The successful candidate will have:
- A strong academic background and appropriate professional experience at a senior level.
- An appropriate level of Senior Management experience.
- A thorough knowledge and understanding of INTO’s role and objectives and the external environment in which the Organisation operates.
- An in depth understanding and analysis of the education system, including the continuum of teacher education, teaching and learning, curriculum and assessment, special education and social inclusion and continuous professional development.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and collaborative skills and an ability to build and maintain relationships with, and influence a wide range of stakeholders.
- Proven success in generating education research and policy development.
- Strong analytical, reporting and project management skills.
- Demonstrable leadership experience and the ability to manage and develop a team of people to deliver a reliable and quality service for INTO members.
- A results driven approach with evidence of being innovative, energetic and flexible in advancing strategy.
The successful appointee will enter into a detailed contract of employment with the INTO and the place of work will be INTO Head Office, Parnell Square, Dublin.

The INTO is the largest teachers’ organisation in Ireland representing the trade union and professional interests of 50,000 members in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. A vacancy has arisen at senior official level in the Legal, Industrial Relations and Equality of the INTO. The successful applicant will be required to work as part of a dynamic team in Head Office committed to achieving the INTO’s objectives. While initial duties will be in the Legal, Industrial Relation and Equality Section, flexibility is a key requirement and the capacity to work across all sections of the office is essential.
The post involves a wide range of senior management responsibilities to ensure the successful delivery of INTO policy and objectives at individual, team and organisation level.
The successful candidate will have:
- A strong academic background and a minimum of five years’ relevant professional experience.
- A comprehensive knowledge of the INTO to drive the delivery of INTO key priorities.
- A thorough understanding of current educational, legal, industrial relations and equality issues.
- Experience and expertise in negotiating and handling complex legal and industrial relations issues.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and collaborative skills and an ability to build, maintain and influence a wide range of stakeholders.
- High standards of research, policy development and project management skills.
- A commitment to promote at individual and team level the delivery of quality services to members.
- A results driven approach with evidence of being innovative, energetic and flexible in advancing strategy.
The senior official is based in INTO Head Office in Dublin. The senior official will be required to travel to carry out the duties of the post.
You are required to hold a valid full driving licence and to continue to hold such a licence during your employment with the INTO. You are required to have a car available for your use on INTO business. Travel and subsistence rates are paid in accordance with public service rates and conditions

The senior official is based in the INTO Head Office in Dublin for the duration of the contract 1 July 2021 to 31 August 2022. The senior official will be required to travel to carry out the duties of the post.
