INTO Northern Secretary appointed to key ICTU role

The Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) congratulates Gerry Murphy on his appointment as Assistant General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, as he prepares to stand down as INTO Northern Secretary.

Mr Murphy has served the union with distinction for more than 11 years and will continue in the role until INTO Northern Conference next March.

A highly respected trade unionist, he has been instrumental in increasing union membership in Northern Ireland, gaining the trust and respect of fellow unions who elected him to the Presidency of Congress in 2019, and appointed him as lead negotiator for the Northern Ireland Teachers’ Council.

Before leaving his post next year, Mr Murphy will continue to lead the Fair Pay for Teachers campaign, ramping up pressure on the authorities to deliver a fair deal to the teachers of Northern Ireland.

Speaking on his new appointment, INTO Northern Secretary Mr Murphy said:

I wish to acknowledge the hard work and commitment of our Northern Committee, Central Executive Committee, local officers and staff who do so much for our members. I extend my gratitude to all who helped and advised me over the years.

It has been a pleasure to hold a leadership position in Ireland’s largest education union. I have every faith that the organisation will continue to improve the working conditions of teachers and ensure that the education system on our shared island becomes the best that it possibly can be.”

The INTO will shortly initiate a recruitment process for a new Northern Secretary.
