A message of thanks to our members from the Northern Secretary

On behalf of Northern Committee I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our members who took part in yesterday’s historic strike action, where, for the first time all of the recognised teachers unions took part, along with comrades from other public sector unions.

It was a massive show of strength to those with the power who make decisions of the determination of teachers across the north that they will be valued and that they want a real terms salary uplift that truly reflects the work they do with children and young people, in preparing them to be the future leaders in our society.

It was humbling to see the numbers who stood on picket lines and who attended the rally in Belfast yesterday, in their continued campaign for fair pay.

A special word of thanks to all who made the case so articulately across all media.

This afternoon’s news on budgets which indicates that education is facing a 2.5% cut compared with last year in its budget – just under £70m less in cash terms, although predictable, will make our campaign even more challenging. Despite these developments we remain determined, steadfast and united in our campaign for fair pay for teachers and school leaders, and in fighting to ensure that schools will be properly funded to deliver a first class education for all.

As often before we must eventually prevail.
