The Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) today launched its submission ahead of Ireland’s Presidency of the European Union in the second half of 2026. This Presidency offers a unique opportunity to shape European policy in ways that will strengthen primary and special education in Ireland and across the EU.
The INTO submission calls on Government to ensure that teachers’ voices are central to discussions during the Presidency. The document sets out proposals to advance education, promote democratic engagement and secure decent work for all.
Key priorities highlighted include:
- Reducing class sizes to meet EU standards and tackling overcrowded classrooms.
- The Union of Skills initiative, advocating investment in teacher professional development, improved working conditions and targeted supports for disadvantaged learners.
- Digital education and AI safeguards, ensuring equitable access to technology and robust protections for data privacy.
- Securing ICT funding in the next EU Multiannual Financial Framework to support infrastructure and teacher training.
- Recognition of teaching qualifications across EU member states to address teacher shortages.
- Youth participation and civic engagement, amplifying democratic values during Ireland’s Presidency.
- Quality jobs and collective bargaining, ensuring fair pay and conditions for all workers, including teachers.
- Standing up for international human rights in Gaza, Ukraine, South Sudan and around the world.
Speaking at the launch, INTO General Secretary John Boyle said:
Ireland’s Presidency must put education at the centre of Europe’s agenda. Every child deserves access to quality education, every teacher must be properly supported, and every worker should enjoy the security of a decent job. These are the foundations of a fairer, stronger Europe.
The INTO looks forward to engaging with Government and stakeholders throughout the Presidency to ensure these priorities are actioned.
