Introduce Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOs)

The INTO is committed to an inclusive education system that meets the needs of all children, particularly those with additional educational needs. Teachers cannot deliver this alone—they need support from the Department of Education and Youth and other professionals.

A recent research paper from Mary Immaculate College recommends formalising the SENCO role in Irish schools, with dedicated time and inclusion in school leadership teams. INTO’s workload survey found that special education needs are the greatest source of pressure for teachers and principals.

The INTO is calling for the introduction of SENCOs as new assistant principal roles in primary schools. These posts would focus solely on coordinating special education provision. They should be introduced first in the 1,517 schools with three or more special education teaching posts.
