Exceptional Closure Day for Schools: Monday 19 September

Education Minister, Michelle McIlveen, has written to schools outlining the arrangements for next Monday’s exceptional closure:

“It is therefore expected that schools should close on Monday 19 September 2022, observing the Bank Holiday. This will enable the paying of respects to Her Majesty and takes account of reduced public services on that date. All school staff will be paid as normal.

19 September 2022 should be treated as an Exceptional Closure Day. Schools observing this do not have to apply to the Department for approval on this occasion. They should use Code “Y” against pupil’s attendance record”.

She further details the additional action to be taken for supply teachers:

“Principals are required to take action to ensure that supply staff are not impacted as a result of the school closure on 19 September 2022.

Schools should honour existing bookings for supply staff for 19 September 2022 to ensure that they receive a day’s salary. Principals are reminded that it is their responsibility to ensure that this action is taken by the appropriate person in their school”.
