Education Summary

  • There will be a net increase of 250 primary teachers next year.
  • With the exception of 2, 3 and 4 teacher schools the staffing schedule is to remain unaltered for 2012/13.
  • The 199 DEIS Band 1 schools are to move from a ratio based system (20:1 in junior classes and 24:1 in senior classes) to a staffing schedule based on 22:1.
  • There will be a phased withdrawal of 292 “legacy” disadvantaged posts in primary schools over a 3 year period.
  • Principals will be allowed take up Learning Support and Resource Teacher posts.
  • Administrative Principals will be based on pupil numbers (as will Administrative Deputy Principals where relevant).
  • The overall number of resource teachers and SNAs is being maintained, with a revised allocation system.
  • A reduction of 220 EAL posts will be made in 2013/14 and 2014/15.
  • Changes, with immediate effect, to the rules governing payment of qualification allowances to teachers.
  • The Modern Languages in Primary Schools Initiative is being abolished.
    • Update 13th Dec: The Department of Education and Skills have confirmed that the Modern Languages Initiative will continue for the remainder of the school year 2011/2012.
  • 2% reduction for capitation and related grants in 2012 and 2013 and 1% reduction in 2014 and 2015.
  • Grant towards the cost of student teachers attendance at Summer Gaeltacht Colleges withdrawn.
