INTO extends sympathy to family of former Minister for Education Martin McGuinness

The INTO has extended the sympathy of its members to the family of the late Martin McGuinness who died today.

Mr McGuiness was the first education minister of the devolved era in the north and he made a hugely positive impact on the education sector.

In his role as education minister he attended a number of INTO Congresses and Northern Conferences. His contributions to these gatherings were insightful, at times challenging but always warmly received.

As Minister he championed the ending of the 11+ exam in the north, was passionate about tackling education disadvantage and advanced supports for the Irish language.

As a mark of respect and in recognition of his contribution to education the INTO will suspend the half day strike and accompanying protest at Parliament Building planned for Thursday 23 March.
