On 25 September 1917, Thomas Ashe died as a result of injuries sustained while being force-fed in Mountjoy Jail. On the centenary of his death, INTO has organized a commemorative event looking at Ashe’s life as a teacher, an INTO member and a nationalist leader and at the huge significance of his death and funeral.

The event will take place in the Teachers’ Club (36, Parnell Square) and will be chaired by INTO President John Boyle.

The speakers are:

  • Anna McKeown, Principal of Corduff NS, Lusk (where Thomas Ashe had been Principal up to the 1916 Rising) on: “Thomas Ashe, teacher, principal and local activist”.
  • Noel Ward, Deputy General Secretary INTO on “Ashe, the INTO and the Organisation’s ambivalence about his political/military role”.
  • Conor Dodd, Historian at Glasnevin Cemetery, on: “The funeral of Thomas Ashe – huge, historic, a barometer of public mood, in the context of political funerals of the period”.
