All supply teachers must be registered with the GTCNI. The GTCNI approves registration and eligibility of all teachers to teach in schools in Northern Ireland.
Although teachers must be registered with the GTCNI in order to join the NISTR, since other checks are also required, applicants are advised by the NISTR not to delay completing the NISTR application until after they are registered with the GTCNI.
Supply teachers may need to have an enhanced disclosure check before they are released to the active pool of the NISTR register.
