Grainne Cleary, Accountant

Gráinne Cleary joined the INTO in 1996 in the position of Senior Accounts Assistant. She successfully completed her ACCA examinations in 1998 and was appointed to the role of INTO Accountant. She works closely with Noel Ward, Deputy General Secretary and General Treasurer, in the Membership and Finance Department.

She is involved with the Examiner of Accounts, Accounts Committee and Benefit Funds Committee, and deals with Branch and District Officers on financial matters.

In January 2018 Grainne was designated as the INTO Data Protection Officer.

Alison Gilliland, Senior Official

Alison Gilliland is Senior Official with responsibility for INTO Learning. She is also the union’s Equality Officer and acts as secretary to the INTO Equality Committee. In her role Alison develops and supports all aspects of professional development and learning for members.

Alison was previously appointed as Acting Senior Official for social inclusion in the Communications, Principals and Social Inclusion Section of the INTO in September 2006 and previously worked as an Official in the Professional Development Unit of INTO from December 2004.

A native of Co Monaghan, Alison previously taught in Granada (Spain), Our Lady Immaculate SNS (Darndale), and Swords Educate Together NS.

During her time teaching Alison was an active member of Dublin North West Branch. She has held the role of Branch Organiser and Staff Representative Tutor for District 15. She has also been a District 15 co-ordinator of INTO summer courses.

David O'Sullivan, Senior Official

A native of Birr, Co Offaly, David was recently appointed as a Senior Official to the Legal Industrial and Leadership Section in Head Office. Prior to taking up this position, he worked as an Official in Head Office and as a teacher for 12 years in Scoil Na Mainistreach, Celbridge, Co Kildare. He was a special duties post holder and served as teachers’ representative on the board of management.

David has previously been involved in the structures of the INTO at both branch and district level. He has served as secretary to District IX. From 2009-2011 he was branch organiser in the former Dublin West Branch. In May 2010, he was elected to the Equality Committee as a representative for District IX. In September 2011, he took up an internship in Head Office.

David’s qualifications include a B.Ed (UL, 1999), Graduate Diploma in Primary School Language Teaching – German (ITB, 2004), M.A. (ITB,2007), Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Leadership (NUIM, 2010), Advanced Diploma in Applied Employment Law (Kings Inns, 2017) and an Advanced Diploma in Law and Education (Kings Inns, 2018).

John O'Brien, Senior Official

John is a native of Cork and worked for Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance in both Underwriting and Sales. He has been an active trade union member since 1979 and served on the Irish Executive of the Amicus (now UNITE) Trade Union for many years. He completed a Diploma in Management & Employee Relations and also served as a seconded full time union representative within the Irish Finance Sector before joining INTO in January 2008.

John works in the Conditions of Employment Section in INTO Head Office and has wide-ranging responsibilities, including dealing with Staffing, Pension & Retirement, Sick leave and related issues, such as the Salary Protection Scheme. John is also the Co-ordinator for the INTO Global Solidarity Network and the Global Citizenship School Steering Committee.

David Geary, Head of Communications/Senior Official

David Geary is Head of Communications with the INTO, having joined in June 2018. David leads the work of the union's communications unit.

A native of Galway, David comes to us from the UK’s largest trade association, where he was Deputy Head of EU and International Affairs. Having led the organisation’s EU Referendum campaign, David led the industry response to Brexit, curating one of the largest research projects ever undertaken into trade and labour. An experienced communicator and advocate, David has led advocacy campaigns in the US, the UK and at an EU level working for leading international organisations including Amnesty International and European Movement International.

Outside his professional roles, David spent five years volunteering as Head of Political Engagement for Pride in London, one of the largest equality events in the world, working with the highest levels of Government.

David graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from NUI Galway in 2007. Subsequently, undertaking postgraduate study David graduated with a law degree (LLB, 2010) and a Master’s in International Public Policy and Diplomacy (MBS, 2011) from University College Cork.
