Teachers' Children's Allowance
Children's Allowance is paid to national teachers who were in service on 31 December 1979. Those who entered or returned to the service after 31 December 1979 do not have an entitlement to Children's Allowance as this scheme was terminated on 1 January 1980. The allowance is paid for each child under 16 years of age or under 21 years if in full-time education.
The rate of allowance for each eligible child is currently €115 per annum (effective from September 2009).
Application for Children's Allowance should be made directly to the Payments Section, Department of Education and Skills, Athlone, Co Westmeath.
A special form (Form API) is provided for this purpose. In regard to an initial application it is necessary to enclose a copy of the child's birth certificate.
Application for benefit must be renewed on an annual basis and the Department of Education and Skills normally issues forms for this purpose in April each year. Completed application forms must be signed by the chairperson of the board of management.
Where both partners work in the public sector only one allowance is payable in respect of each eligible child.
Teachers' Children's Allowance is payable in addition to Social Welfare Children's Allowance.
